Looking Forward: Summer Second Saturdays

It’s hard to believe that we are already half way through our Second Saturday series for 2019! We started with the theme Love & Art in February and segwayed into spring with Women in Art, Slow Art Day, Color and just closed June’s Gardens celebration this past weekend. It’s been an adventure coming up with special ways to bring the museum to life in a new way each month. I love meeting people who had never been to the museum before, who were not really sure what they were in for when they walked in the door, and then on their way out, they are utterly shocked and pleased by what they’ve experienced inside our hidden gem.

A favorite experience that we try to have every Second Saturday, is our unique and interesting artist demonstrations. In June, local artist Julie Johnston was with us creating phenomenal floral arrangements using fresh cut flowers donated from local vendors. Julie made four spectacular arrangements throughout the day and also made a floral photo-op frame for Second Saturday visitors to use for a photo-booth experience.  The way Julie is able to turn pieces of nature into beautiful works of art before our eyes is inspiring.

We have some pretty exciting Second Saturdays coming up, including our next Second Saturday on July 13th, where we will explore how storytelling and art are related. There are so many stories told within MMAM’s walls, that even if you have been to every Second Saturday so far, there will surely be something new to see, learn and experience. We are especially looking forward to having members of the Great River Shakespeare Festival apprentice company with us for a unique collaboration using their spectacular storytelling talents alongside the museum’s collections. Be sure to check the Second Saturday page as we release new details about live music, unique art activities and special docent-led tours, all of which change from month-to-month.

I cannot thank you enough for all the support you have shown us and how welcoming you have been since I came on board in January. I have made so many new friends, and love seeing new faces each month. I hope to continue connecting with all of you as we forge ahead on this Second Saturday journey. See you again on July 13th!
