Celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions, all under the theme of Flora, and the debut of MMAM’s new literary arts gallery, Waking Worlds: Wondrous Reads for Curious Minds.

Featuring - Spirited and Spirit-Free Bar by Sanborn Canoe Co.

Staged Social

“New faces in contemporary art” (Pickled Matter 2) curator Andy DuCett (Minneapolis, MN) hosts a lively conversation with New York Times bestselling author Aimee Nezhukumatathil and illustrator Fumi Nakamura on their book, World of Wonders (Milkweed Editions), “hands down one of the most beautiful books of the year” (NPR); George Morrison award winning author Mary Cassanova and visual artist Nick Wroblewski (Duluth, MN) about their books, Hush Hush, Forest and Wake Up, Island (University of Minnesota Press); and carries on a conversation between rising Mn Artists star Ian Hanesworth (Winona, MN) and AR collaborator Marlena Myles (Imnížaska Othúŋwe, Mnísota) about creative placekeeping and the artist’s role in centering place.  

Gallery Performance by The Nunnery

Featuring selections from their new album, Floating Gardens, Sarah Elstran (Minneapolis, MN) delicately “bridges the gap between bright-eyed pop composition and hands-on atmospheric live layering of voice.”

Dancehall Shakedown by DJ Rhupshaker

Best known for his deep funk cuts, resident artist at No Name Bar (Winona, MN), DJ Rhumpshaker, aka Dr. Bob, closes the night down as the lights go down with a dance party to die for.  

Live Painting by The Joy Labs

Sarah Johnson of the Joy Labs (Winona, MN) pulls inspiration from flora for a live painting experience. 


About the new exhibitions:

Flora |  Keinen + Hosono + Hanesworth 

A trajectory of three artists, three mediums, and three masterful surface explorations of the botanical wonders of our world. Historic Japanese prints from Imao Keinen, contemporary porcelain vessels by Hitomi Hosono, and printed fabrics and original prints from Ian Hanesworth.

literary arts | Waking Worlds: Wondrous Reads for Curious Minds

Featuring original illustrations from three book projects; Mary Casanova’s Wake Up, Island (University of Minnesota Press) and Hush, Hush, Forest (University of Minnesota Press) as illustrated by printmaker Nick Wroblewski, and World of Wonder: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments (Milkweed Editions) written by Aimee Nezhukumatathil and illustrated by Fumi Nakamura.
