For the first time, visitors to the MMAM can explore the allure and profound cultural inspiration of historic Japanese prints. The second exhibition in the Museum’s Woodcut Print Series, The Floating World is a major exhibition featuring 50 extraordinary Japanese Edo Period (1600-1868) woodcut prints.  

During the Edo Period, Japan saw the emergence of publishing houses, artists and craftsmen who created enchanting images of daily life in the Ukiyo-e style. Ukiyo-e means “images of the floating world,” and refers to the arts and entertainment districts in Japanese cities. Ukiyo-e prints were, at the time, often used for commercial purposes, and today are valued as exciting cultural artifacts and artistic achievements.
