MMAM Announces 2020 Exhibition Schedule

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is excited to announce its exhibition schedule for 2020. MMAM features one of the finest collections of historic American and European artwork in the midwest, with works by artists such as Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent van Gogh, and Emanuel Leutze’s iconic Washington Crossing the Delaware. Complementing it’s permanent collections are 8-10 temporary exhibitions annually of great art inspired by water. These exhibitions feature contemporary works from regional, national and international artists, and historic collections on loan from other cultural institutions, private collectors, and MMAM’s own collection.

2020 will spotlight three contemporary Minnesota artists, Gregory Euclide, Mark Herman, and Greg DeGrace. Gregory Euclide creates unique paintings, sculptures, dioramas, and mixed media installation pieces exploring the collision of nature and mankind in his exhibition Observation Infiltration, opening in January. Mark Herman’s Landmarks, opening in May, will feature fine art prints of Minnesota’s favorite natural and man-made landmarks. Greg DeGrace: Driftless, opens in October 2020, and features abstract paintings referencing the Driftless Region of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Shutterbug: The Mid-Century Photography of David Tewes, opening in January 2020, is a time capsule into post-war America. This exhibition features the found photography of World World II veteran and Hutchinson, MN native David Tewes. After Tewes’ death in 1991, his family discovered a large collection of his Kodachrome photographic slides taken between 1944 and 1955 of his native Minnesota and his travels across America. This is the first ever public exhibition of his personal snapshots.

Christy Lee Rogers: Baroque Water Worlds will open in May of 2020. Hawaii native Christy Lee Rogers creates beautiful, complex, and colorful images of people underwater. Her fluid compositions, choreography, costumes, dramatic lighting, and bold colors make her large-scale digital images appear like 17th century Baroque paintings. Her work is exhibited globally and she is the winner of the 2019 Sony World Photographer of the Year award.

The photography of Mexico City artist Christian Vizl will be exhibited at MMAM beginning in September of 2020. Christian Vizl:Silent Kingdom explores the mysteries of the deep. Vizl captures stunning black-and-white images, with a mastery of shadow and light, to portray the ocean’s creatures as they are rarely seen, at home in the ethereal world beneath the waves.

Rounding out the 2020 season is Oh, Canada! an exhibition of historic and contemporary Canadian artists, and Titanic Stories, featuring artwork, eyewitness accounts, and artifacts associated with the world’s most famous shipwreck.
