Film descriptions
Freshwater (dir. Ian Planchon, Lynn Melling)
This documentary dives into the cold waters of Lake Superior along Minnesota's North Shore. It contains 10% of Earth's freshwater, yet this massive force of nature remains largely unexplored. One group of people, however, is intimately aware of its power. From the surfers who catch its waves to the scientists who study its depths, learn why Lake Superior is a precious resource that should never be taken for granted.
Little Stream Big Magic (dir. Ian Shive)
In Franklin, West Virginia, something magical is happening in the local streams! A native trout species pushed to the brink of extinction is making a remarkable comeback. Working with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Partners for Fish & Wildlife, local farmers, ranchers and the community at large are uniting behind this incredible restoration effort. This beautiful and uplifting film shows audiences what's possible for grassroots conservation nationally.
Loon (dir. Jason Whalen, Chris Zuker)
Mike Freed took the trail name of Loon after the spirit of the lakes of the north. He's carried the name with him all over the country, through thousands of trail miles. In his later years, he returned to his home in northern Minnesota where he cares for his property of more than 2,000 acres of land in the state's wilderness lake country.
The Wintering Grounds (dir. Jeff Springer)
For most of the year, bands of world class freestyle kayakers roam the land in search of waves. But when the rivers freeze, everyone finds their way to a special spot on the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia border. Squatting in an abandoned parking lot, they spend the winter training for the next world championships on North America’s best winter whitewater. Although called “certifiable lunatics” by the locals, this tight knit group is proof of the power of family and that indeed everything is more fun with friends.
