Yang Vue, Paaj Ntaub or Pa Doa
10:30am - 12:30pm in Cloth as Community: Hmong Textiles in America Gallery
Paj ntaub (pronounced "pan dau") means "flower cloth" and is produced by Hmong artists. The patterns, symbolic to Hmong culture, come from forms in nature. Winona artist Yang Vue observed and studied her mother weaving the pa doa, and began to assist her when she was ten years old. See her work, observe her process, and ask questions in this informal show and tell demonstration. English interpretation provided by Project FINE.
Cha Neng Vang, Qeej Instrument
1:00pm - 3:00pm in Cloth as Community: Hmong Textiles in America Gallery
The qeej (pronounced 'geng') is a free-reed instrument made from six bamboo reeds. The qeej instrument plays an essential role in the traditional Hmong funeral ceremony, but is also used in marriage ceremonies and new year’s ceremonies. Cha Neng Vang, a Qeej player from the twin cities, will play this instrument and answer questions as requested. English interpretation provided by Project FINE
