A Nation Takes Place: Residency, Dameun Strange Performance

Saturday, October 11, 2025 | 6:30p - 7:30p

Dameun Strange will use his A Nation Takes Place artist residency, funded with support from Mellon Foundation, to host a workshop and performance at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum as part of the iDMa 2025: Folk Media Conference.

Join award winning composer and mixed media artist Dameun Strange for an improvisation workshop in MMAM’s Oberton Education Room from 12p-1p.

There are many stories to be found on the Mississippi River and in this workshop Strange and participants will dig into the spirit of the music of the Black Atlantic. Support from the collective requires deep listening skills. Workshop participants will work on those deep listening skills and how to better incorporate the skill of improvisation in their lives.

Later that evening from 6:30p to 7:30p, Dameun Strange will host a conference keynote closing performance, a digital score titled, As Above So Below, with his improv band IBX (ee-BEKS), a sextet of performers using electro acoustic and electronic instruments. The piece draws on West African folklore, the history of the Atlantic Passage, and contemporary climate change narratives, to craft a unique multimedia performance that engages with folk practice as a vital tool for community survival in times of catastrophic upheaval.

The general public is welcome to attend both programs. No registration required for the workshop. For conference registration and schedule click here. Please contact conference organizer, Professor Davin Heckman: dheckman@winona.edu with questions.
