About Liz Sexton:

Minneapolis, Minnesota artist Liz Sexton creates sculptures that blur the line between the animal kingdom and human life. Accompanying these works are photographs and video depicting humans wearing these masks in natural, as well as urban, environments, photographed by Ben Toht. Her work was exhibited at MMAM May 6 - September 3, 2023 in the exhibition, Liz Sexton: Out of Water, and her work North American Beaver Mask, is now on view at MMAM in the exhibition, Fluid: What is Marine Art, and What Can It Be?

“Nature has always been my biggest inspiration and source of solace. In recent years, as I have felt increasingly disconnected from the natural world; the paper mâché sculptures I create allow me to dive back in, an exploration and celebration of our fellow animals with whom we share the Earth. Using repurposed materials, such as old packing supplies and discarded brown bags, each piece is built from hundreds to thousands of paper strips, slowly shaped until its character emerges. Knowing that most inhabitants of our planet face an existential threat from climate change, habitat loss, and displacement driven by humans, much of my work highlights an inevitable sense of out-of-placeness, which I try to approach with curiosity and humor. I am always left with deepened appreciation for whatever animal I recreate and hope viewers can experience a bit of that reverence as well.” - Liz Sexton

About the Minnesota Marine Art Museum:

Located at 800 Riverview Drive, in Winona, MN, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a nonprofit art museum that creates meaningful art experiences that explore our relationship with water. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the purpose-built museum features six galleries, an educational and events space, and a destination retail shop, and the Waterbar Cafe + Provisions on its seven-acre riverside campus. Through this surprising diversity, MMAM not only explores what marine art is but also pushes the boundaries of what marine art can be. mmam.org
