Alexis Rockman: Making Oceanus

  • Minnesota Marine Art Museum 800 Riverview Drive Winona, MN, 55987 United States (map)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2025 | 6P CST [doors at 5p]

Hybrid in-person + virtual event

Join us for a Minnesota Marine Art Museum curator-led panel discussion exploring the making of Oceanus by contemporary artist Alexis Rockman.

Alexis Rockman: Oceanus is on view now at MMAM through January 4, 2026. This two-gallery exhibition features a 24-foot-long oil painting accompanied by ten watercolors, all commissioned in 2021 by Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, for their permanent collection. The exhibition marks a shift in perspective, raising awareness and inspiring conversations about the critical global issues facing our oceans due to maritime activities, issues deeply tied to our collective cultural, social, and economic heritage. MMAM’s new Associate Curator of Climate and Clean Water, Kamala Nair, will join longtime curator Jon Swanson as they interview Rockman on the intersection of science and art in his work.

This is a hybrid event, offered both in-person and virtually. Alexis Rockman will be streaming live from the East Coast. Particpants are welcome to register and watch from the comfort of their homes, or join us in the galleries at MMAM! Attendees at the museum will have the unique opportunity to experience the talk while surrounded by Rockman’s work, fully immersed in the exhibition as he speaks about his process. Doors open at 5p, and the panel discussion will begin in-person and online at 6p.
