Got a creative class who loves to make art?  We’ve got you covered. New for the 2026-2027 school year, we will be piloting an opportunity for your students to enjoy the galleries and make an individual art project! We will be offering 15 two-hour sessions over the school year (only on select Friday mornings.)

About

Our new Discover & Create takes your students’ museum experience one step further with a two-hour MMAM field trip that combines gallery exploration with hands-on art making.

Students will spend one hour in the galleries on our Discovery Tour, led by trained MMAM docents. Through looking, talking, questioning, and sketching, students will explore works of art in ways that encourage curiosity and active participation.

Students will spend an additional hour in our art classroom for hands-on art making led by a licensed K-12 art teacher.  Projects will invite students to experiment with the elements of art, try new materials or techniques, express an idea or feeling, or simply discover what happens when they make something of their own.

To accommodate larger groups, students will rotate between the two experiences. Some students will begin in the galleries and then move to the art classroom, while others will begin with art making and then explore the galleries.

  • Designed especially for grades 3–4, with flexibility for grades 1–7 upon request.

  • Minimum- 20 students

  • Maximum- 64 students 

  • $12 per student, including all art-making supplies

  • Available select Friday mornings only!

Choose Your Art-Making Experience

We want the art-making portion of the experience to work for your students.

Teachers can choose the project they think their students will enjoy most, or share information about their group with us and let us recommend a project that we think will be a good fit.

Choose from:

  • Printmaking:  Using a piece of foam, students carve their plate, ink it, and create a series of 4 × 6" prints.

  • Collage: Students explore shape, color, texture, layering, and composition to create their own unique collage.

  • Watercolor Pastel Bookmarks: Students combine watercolor and oil pastel techniques to create a colorful 3 × 9" bookmark.

  • Shaving Cream Paper Marbling: Students use shaving cream and liquid color to create swirling, one-of-a-kind marbled papers.

  • Gelli Plate Printing:  Students experiment with paint, texture, pattern, layering, and color to create colorful monoprints using a Gelli plate.

Kindly Note:

Teachers & Chaperones: We need your helping hands! Please plan to actively participate in the art-making experience by assisting students and helping with materials and clean-up. We ask that schools provide one participating adult for every 10 students.
