This reinstallation of featured pieces from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum collection, combined with rotation of select works on loan from artists and institutions, seeks to introduce viewers to the ways that artists find inspiration from water in their work.

Throughout history, artists have depicted water as a subject of beauty, mystery, and power, capturing its ever-changing forms, from tranquil lakes and flowing rivers to turbulent seas and crashing waves. Water has served as a symbol of life, renewal, spirituality, exploration, and the sublime forces of nature, while also reflecting humanity’s cultural beliefs, historical experiences, and relationship with the natural world. Today, artists continue to explore water through diverse perspectives and mediums, using it to address themes of identity, memory, environmental change, and our shared responsibility to protect this essential resource.
