Liquid Music:

A Soundtrack Inspired by Water

 
 

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum has collaborated with Twin Cities based Liquid Music to provide a curated musical accompaniment to the museum’s riverside atrium space. The selected music amplifies some of the most ambitious composers and musical artists creating work inspired by water. MMAM’s mission is to engage visitors in meaningful visual art experiences that explore the ongoing and historic human relationship with water, and these musical selections aim to add another artistic element to explore this theme.

Liquid Music is a leading producer of special projects in contemporary music, an internationally recognized laboratory for artists from across genre and disciplinary spectrums. This creative institution serves as a safe place for performers, composers and audiences to stretch and challenge their comfort zones – to discover, learn and be transformed.

Founded at The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in 2012, Liquid Music became an independent LLC in 2020, owned and operated by artistic director Kate Nordstrum who has been widely praised for her programmatic vision, catholic tastes and “storied matchmaking” (Minneapolis Star Tribune). Through Liquid Music, Nordstrum has built a boundary-defying platform for collaboration and earned her reputation as “the most adventurous music curator in town” (MinnPost), “a presenter of rare initiative” (Star Tribune), and “Twin Cities’ curatorial powerhouse with international pull” (Minnesota Public Radio).

“Our Liquid Playlist is 100+ pieces of music from current, past, and future artistic partners and influencers, celebrating, contemplating, and honoring Water,” says the Patrick Marschke, the project’s co-curator. “Commissioned by The Minnesota Marine Art Museum for its Atrium and communal gathering spaces, the playlist strives to capture the Museum’s spirit and mission to “push the boundaries of what marine art can be” with an eclectic collection of music that effortlessly flows through and transcends genre.”

When looking at the challenge of creating a water-themed playlist, Nordstrum said that “It’s not about simply ‘fitting in’ to the constraints, but actually embracing them — using the unique parameters as a way to pull yourself out of preconceived notions. It has always been something that I actively seek out, and often results in surprising and novel ideas and opportunities.”
