June Second Saturday: Home Edition

Paint the Rainbow: A Celebration of Color!

Inspired by our collections, exhibitions, local artists, talented staff and volunteers, virtual Second Saturdays will offer some of our favorite components of the on-site program that you can do at home, plus some interactive elements that we could only offer online!

Our theme for June is Paint the Rainbow: A Celebration of Color! This powerful element affects so many facets of our lives. Color can influence our emotions, impulses, appetite and even our blood pressure. Artists use color in many different ways.

Artist Demonstration with Molly Lyn

How often can you see a work of art come to life before your eyes? Watch how local artist Molly Lyn uses technology to bring her drawing of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum to life with color. Watch how color can affect the feel and mood as she creates both realistic and imaginative versions!

Molly Lyn is a Winona-based artist who has been tattooing since 2013. Molly is well versed in various art mediums, but using technology to create digital versions of her art is especially useful when working on designs with clients and for sharing her art during the COVID-19 pandemic. To view Molly’s portfolio, visit artbymollylyn.com or follow her on Instagram @artbymollylyn.

A few Points about Pointillism!

Watch Executive Director Nicole Chamberlain-Dupree talk about the science of color in this brief video of Georges Seurat’s Seated Man work in MMAM’s collection (which is a study for his big and famous La Grande Jatte painting).

Second Saturday Storytelling

Stories are a wonderful way to connect with artworks because certain artworks and stories remind us of each other. Watch MMAM Volunteer, Laura Armstrong, read Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are and examine a painting by Martin Johnson Heade.

Bingo Overboard: Home Edition

Celebrate one of our favorite Second Saturday offerings at home today! To play Bingo Overboard Home Edition, search for the objects around your dwelling and check them off until you get a bingo (or blackout!). Objects in books, art, photos, and movies count too. Can’t find the item? Feel free to get creative and draw it. Happy scavenging!

If you get a bingo, tell the password (Ahoy, matey) to the front desk to win a prize next time you are at MMAM.

MMAM Memory Game

Familiarize yourself with artworks in the European and American Collections of the MMAM while playing this fun matching game. Play all four decks!

Cookies

A treat enjoyed by many Second Saturday attendees is a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie.  We offer these treats as an incentive to help give us some feedback about the event on a survey.  If you want to bake your own homemade chocolate chip cookies, here is a recipe we highly recommend.  Bon appetit!
