Travis Novitsky (American, Grand Portage Anishinaabe Nation, b. 1975), Stellar Skies in the Land of 10,000 Lakes (2015), Digital photograph.

Photographer Travis Novitski has been photographing the woods and the North Shore of Lake Superior for more than 35 years. As a member of the Grand Portage Anishnaabe Nation, the woods and waters of his homeland hold deep personal, historic, and cultural connections. He is primarily a nature and wildfire photographer, exploring the flora and fauna of northern Minnesota, but has a special reverence for photographing the night sky. He captures images of the Milky Way, the constellations, and the Northern Lights (Aurora Borelias) while pondering our place beneath the stars. “ When I'm gazing up at the sky, especially on such a quiet night, I feel utterly and completely relaxed and refreshed.  I think it is important for us to keep that connection to the stars as much as we can. Because it is, ultimately, where we all came from.” On display are photographs of the night sky, woods, and waters of Northern Minnesota relating how Indigenous skywatchers have seen the sky and their place in it.
