"Winona" Color-by-Number by Sarah Johnson
Winona’s Creative Laureate, Sarah Johnson, is no stranger to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. You may have spotted her rainbow glow at various events, or taken one of her ongoing programs she leads at the MMAM called, Art of Living: Riding the Wave.
We love Johnson’s enthusiasm for the arts and her community. A few months ago, we asked her to be a part of our Second Saturday arts access program by doing a live demonstration of her mural painting. She agreed and then offered to make the mural a “paint by number” format so that visitors (and staff- yes!) could paint the mural with her throughout the day!
We have the 6 x 8 foot mural safely stored at the Museum, and as soon as we get a chance to safely host a Second Saturday, we will paint the mural together. Until then, Johnson has created a printable “stay at home” version of her mural design complete with a color key.
Johnson states:
“The original intention of the community paint-by-number was to give opportunities for folks to be creative regardless of their status as an artist or not. Now, in different times, the coloring sheet is an opportunity for a mindful, calming activity to do in our homes. Now the community mural is something to look forward to when we are able to gather together again. I am continually thinking about how that gathering and communal creativity will be an emotional and uplifting moment and it is giving me hope."

Happy Coloring!
