The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is excited to partner with the Winona Symphony Orchestra to bring you Water Music, evenings that marry two art forms and celebrate their shared inspiration.
Titled The Big Catch, this concert is inspired by the current MMAM exhibition, Art for Fish/Art for Humans by American artist Kristian Brevik. The program for this evening centers around Schubert's masterpiece for piano and strings, the "Trout" Quintet. In the Quintet, Schubert creates a thrilling Theme and Variations based on his own song by the same title, and the work now forms one of the cornerstones of the repertoire. Complementing the Schubert are two works by American composers, first a high-octane work by Libby Larsen titled Four on the Floor followed by a Quintet by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Zwilich's work is directly inspired by Schubert's "Trout" but gives the same melody a distinctly American flair by recasting it in the style of the Blues.
