Our Impact | Your Museum

Executive Director’s Report | Scott Pollock

If rebound was the word we used to sum up 2022, then the word “experimental” best describes our efforts in 2023. For a museum poised to make good on its promise of becoming a nationally recognized center for arts and culture in Southeastern Minnesota when it was founded in 2006, MMAM was able to try a few new things out in 2023, and move us closer to that promise.

We grew our networks, partnering with art galleries, museums, musicians, book publishers, and foundations. We brought our mission work out into the community and welcomed younger, more diverse audiences than ever before. We leaned into our commitment to making the environment and clean water a priority in our efforts moving forward.

I often remind people that the museum turned 17 years old in 2023. For some people, that may have been the first time they saw their first punk show. For others, that may be the year their curfew changed. And for others, that may have been the year they made new friends, discovered new communities, and began to try on a new hairstyle, clothes or identity…if only to begin shaping what their young adult years will be. Needless to say, we made a lot of new friends in 2023, retained old ones, and realized that there are some things we’re doing that will undoubtedly stick, and others we can scale to have the best impact.

Despite our age, one thing remains constant - MMAM is committed to creating meaningful art experiences that explore our relationship to water. And our story, the work we do, with the artists and art partners we do it with, is getting recognized.

I am forever grateful for all your patience and support in the work we are doing, the impact we are having, and the places we are going.

In admiration of your support,

Scott Pollock, Executive Director

Year In Review

/ JANUARY

In partnership with the University of Minnesota Press, Milkweed Editions, and with support from Wenonah Canoe, Minnesota Public Radio and Sanborn Canoe Company, your Museum opens a new 3,400 square foot literary arts exhibition in the Stephen and Barbara Slaggie Family Gallery and launch 2023’s annual theme, Flora & Fauna, to a sold-out 300+ crowd at New Look Preview Party.   Featured visual artists Ian Hanesworth (Winona, MN), Marlena Myles (Imnížaska Othúŋwe, Mnísota), Fumi Nakamura (New York, NY), and Nick Wroblewski (Duluth, MN) share the stage with authors Mary Cassanova (Ranier, MN) and Aimee Nezhukukamthil (Oxford, MS) and guest emcee Andy Ducett (Minneapolis, MN), carrying on about the ways their respective artistic practice sparks curiosity about our natural world. More than 40% of attendees are first time visitors, establishing a case for how your Museum can be more inviting, accessible and inclusive.

/ FEBRUARY

Your Museum witnesses the busiest February in the organization’s operational history. Gundersen Health Foundation and Elizabeth Calendar King Foundation step forward to support the creation of exhibition hands-on gallery interactives, deepening visitors’ (of all ages) engagement with conversations about our mysterious underwater world. From the signature seek-and-find Overboard Bingo visitor experience, to a new augmented-reality gallery experience created by Marlena Myles (Imnížaska Othúŋwe, Mnísota) that brings the prints of Ian Hanesworth (Winona, MN) to life, these experiences encourage deeper looking, social connections, and build a culture of compassion and care for the communities, both social and natural, we share the planet with…one visitor at a time.  Our Visitor Services Associates begin collecting visitor feedback, noting visitors are encouraged to share their experiences with family and friends, establishing an annual average net promoter score of 78.

/ MARCH

Recognizing the need to move health care out of the clinic and into the community, Winona Health steps in to support your Museum’s free, monthly arts program designed specifically for people in our community living with memory loss and their care partners. SPARK! offers participants an opportunity to enhance their quality of life through social engagement, mental stimulation, and communication. Regular and barrier-free community arts access programs like SPARK!, Toddler Tuesday, and The Joy Lab’s Art of Living/Riding the Wave establish your Museum as a trusted and committed community resource.

/ APRIL

With support from the Union Pacific Railway Foundation, guest co-curators Shana M. griffin (New Orleans, LA) and Tia-Simone Gardner (Minneapolis, MN) begin their curatorial journey at your Museum, tasked to develop an exhibition that explores the difficult effects of the transatlantic slave trade as witnessed by some of today’s most ambitious contemporary artists. In an effort to get it right, your Museum leans into its long-term community study with Engage Winona, a non-profit organization that drives equitable civic action and social change by working to ensure everyone has access and voice. Top findings suggest (a) a desire to experience immersive, multimedia and interactive exhibits, (b) an appreciation to see the museum become a social event venue, (c) encourage kid-friendly activities to engage exhibition content for all ages, (d) encourage more safe spaces to have conversations about race and social divisions, and (e) generate excitement to engage with local artists and communities.

/ MAY

Supported in part by the Southeast Minnesota Arts Council, your Museum builds on the success of the Water Music chamber music program established by the artistic director Erik Rohde (Cedar Falls, IA) from the Winona Symphony Orchestra. Liquid Music curator, Kate Nordstrum (Minneapolis, MN) presents Driftless, a world-premiere of new music inspired by the museum’s tranquil river setting.   Rising star composers Katherine Bergman (Minneapolis, MN), Manami Kakudo (Nagasaki, Japan), Nico Muhly (New York, NY), and Darian Donovan Thomas (Brooklyn, NY) share the riverside stage with Sam Amidon (London, England), Shahzad Ismaily (Brooklyn, NY), and members from the Winona Symphony Orchestra, performing a magical sunset musical set for a sold-out audience of 300+ people. Chosen as a critics-pick by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Driftless performance gains statewide and national attention for the experimental work your Museum is doing.

/ June

A group of 30 visitors participate in a free, docent-led tour of the exhibition Poetry of Nature. Your Museum partners with the New York Historical Society to bring a world-class collection of 40 historic paintings from the Hudson River Valley, never before seen in Minnesota, for a limited five-month run. We use the opportunity to draw attention to the plein air movement stemming from the 19th and 20th centuries in upstate New York, that continue to inspire influential landscape artists established right here in the Upper Mississippi River watershed, including Kami Mendlik (St. Croix, WI) and Fred Somers (Northfield, MN). Your Museum partners with the River Arts Alliance to plan and launch a fall plein air event that includes public workshops, painting demonstrations, and pop-up exhibition and sale that features the work of regional artists: David R. Smith, Scott Lloyd Anderson Kar-Keat Chong, Michele Combs, Joshua Cunningham, Patricia Duncan, Karlyn Eckman, Hannah C. Heyer, Matt Kania, Kelly Schamberger, Lisa K. Stauffer, and Kathie Wheeler. The exhibition project gets mentioned in Fine Art Connoisseur and sets new visitation records for a single weekend at your Museum.

/ JULY

Chef Doug Dahlgren (Winona, MN) from Chef’s Table dish out farm to table fixings to nearly 200 attendees who choose to spend their evening participating in Mississippi Sippin, a relaxed night out at the museum that invites audiences to savor and sip the terroir of the Driftless region.  Meanwhile, in partnership the River Arts Alliance, local ceramicist Anne Plummer (Winona, MN) hosts a lively conversation inside the exhibition, Undercurrent about the ways internationally lauded ceramicst Courtney Mattison (San Francisco, CA) uses her ceramic practice to shape our understanding of the coral reefs and biomes that drive diversity on our planet. And onlookers tip their heads back in laughter as they take in the surprisingly delightful masks made by Liz Sexton (Minneapolis, MN). Lively nights out at the museum become a hallmark of Thursday nights, setting into motion a long-term effort to keep the museum open late every Thursday and align our Free Student Thursdays efforts to encourage engagement with our higher ed constituents, students and educators alike, including Winona State University, St. Mary’s University and Minnesota State College Southeast.

/ AUGUST

Building on the support from the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative and the energy audit conducted in 2022 by University of Minnesota’s MN Technical Assistance Program, the team from Solar Bear, a full-service solar installation company committed to accelerating our transition to a renewable energy future, scopes a 335kw rooftop solar array to power your Museum’s 30,000 square foot facility. Their suggested plan will draw down MMAM’s carbon footprint and energy costs. Our work to both generate public interest in clean water and climate, alongside our internal efforts to address our own operational footprint, drives more interest in our work from media outlets as far reaching as Colossal, Minnesota Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Radio, Climate Art Beat, USA Today, Pollen Midwest, KARE 11, MPLSART.com, and dozens of others.

/ SEPTEMBER

We pilot the new Community Builds program. Kathy Sublett, executive director of Let’s Erase the Stigma, and Sarah Johnson of The Joy Labs facilitate a community art making experience at Maplewood Townhomes, inspired by your Museum’s Flora & Fauna theme, setting into motion a long-term commitment to bringing art making experiences that deepen our relationship with water out of the museum, and into the community. Over the course of a week, residents reclaim an abandoned volleyball court, adding color and character to create a new 900 square foot place space designed by / for  / and in community.

/ OCTOBER

For the second time in the year, your Museum hosts a sold-out studio arts workshop in partnership with Sanborn Canoe Company. Instructor Nate Gill guides a group of 15 eager adult learners who shape their own canoe paddle. Over the course of two days, participants learn about wood types, paddle sizing and the theory of shape, finishing and surface decoration. More importantly, they build relationships with one another, make connections to the content explored in the exhibition, Waking Worlds, and enjoy a meaningful arts experience that connects them to the stunning scenery of the Upper Mississippi river. From paddle making to print making, textiles to ceramics, your Museum begins to shape a long-term commitment to a studio-arts program that leverages craft and art making to deepen our shared understanding of water. These experiences plant the seed for a Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Experience grant to support our efforts, as we take an expansive look at what great art inspired by water is, and who it can serve.

/ NOVEMBER

The Board of Directors hosts a deep dive reflection on its three-year strategic plan, shaped in consultation with Degallier Leadership Solutions, acknowledging the accomplishments to date, and the challenges ahead. Membership on the Board expands to sixteen members, and community task forces are assigned to (a) keep your Museum accountable and on track as it begins to shape a vision for a ‘seventh gallery’ - a suite of experiences that encourages more engagement with the outdoors and riverfront, (b) shape an equity and inclusion work plan to both ensure your Museum remains genuinely committed to serving all, (c) grow your Museum’s art collection and make it more accessible to artists, scholars and other museums, and (d) remain committed to reducing your Museum’s C02 outputs in a long-term effort to ensure all our waterways are cleaner, cared for, and enjoyed by all

/ DECEMBER

The Mellon Foundation, a nationally recognized leader who awards grants to support communities through the power of the arts and humanities, stepped forward with a major gift in support of MMAM’s curation efforts, spurring additional grant support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment For the Arts. Your Museum adds a Director of Development role to guide this work, and direct resources required to sustain our impact work over the next decade.

Community Partner Award | Presented by Jovy Rockey, Board Secretary

Collaboration and partnerships are a core value to your Museum.  Each year, we acknowledge one community partner that helps us move us closer to the vision we aim to achieve - spark wonder and create a more compassionate and connected world, for all

For 2021, we acknowledged the Winona Community Foundation for being a long-standing fiscal sponsor of MMAM, helping the organization get established in its earliest day of operation.

For 2022, we acknowledged Winona Health for their commitment to moving health care out of the clinic and into the community, supporting organizations like the Minnesota Marine Art Museum to create more healthy, resilient communities.

And this year, we are proud to present the MMAM Community Partner Award to Engage Winona, a nonprofit organization that drives equitable civic action and social change by working to ensure everyone has access, voice, and power in community planning, decision-making and changemaking.

In 2016, Engage Winona conducted a study to identify barriers to participation at the Museum across all cross-sections of our community.  The study showed that the main barriers were: (a) price, (b) intimidation , (c)transportation, and (d) language.  Within a year, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum created a new program, Seasonal Saturdays (then Second Saturdays) that addressed and removed all these barriers.

In 2023, Engage Winona was welcomed to help MMAM better understand how to ensure we remain accountable to its community.  Based on feedback from Engage Winona, MMAM is now open late every Thursday until 8P.  And perhaps most important, their findings have been influential in setting a new tone for the Museum best

5 Ways To Support MMAM  | Presented by Katrice Sisson

  1. Friends of MMAM. MMAM now offers organizational memberships for businesses and organizations to both support our efforts and provide benefits to your employees along the way (free admission to your museum!). A big thank you to our recently added friends: Coca-Cola of Winona, HBC, La Crosse Distilling, Merchants Bank, S2S Architects, and WNB Financial.

  2. Art For Every Child Memberships. Did you know that every 5th Grader (and members of their household) are eligible to receive a one-year complimentary membership to MMAM? Sign up your family today!

  3. Rising Generations Memberships. All first-year college students across Minnesota are eligible to receive a one-year complimentary membership to MMAM.  Sign up today!

  4. Anchor Campaign | Annual Fund.  Our goal is simple. To ask all of our members and patrons to go a bit above and beyond in their support of MMAM so that we can make our budget and support the three core pillars of our work - Artistic Excellence, Community Arts Access, and Clean Water & Climate Stewardship.

  5. For The Love of Water Gala.  Mark your calendars. This year’s For The Love of Water Gala will take place at MMAM on Saturday, September 21 with a special cocktail reception featuring a silent auction of 10 signature water-inspired experiences across Minnesota, followed by a sit-down three-course meal curated and prepared by the culinary team from Heirloom Seasonal Bistro.  5 select artworks by 5 water-inspired artists will be auctioned off at the event. Tickets are on sale NOW!
