August Second Saturday: Home Edition

Shaping Waters: The Mighty Mississippi

Our theme for August is “Shaping Waters: The Mighty Mississippi.” Here in Winona, we live on one of the most powerful and celebrated rivers in the world.  The Mighty Mississippi has flowed for at least 5.6 million years, and this sacred river has inspired and influenced artists in a variety of ways.

Second Saturday Art Kits

Let’s get crafty! On Saturday, August 8th, 2020, starting at 10am, there will be 100 art kits in front of the entrance to MMAM. For instructional videos check out the art-kit page. If you do not have an art kit, but would still like to do the projects, a material list is also provided so you can follow along!

Past art kits include painting activities
Homemade boats, with a base made of cork and a sail made of colorful foam
Seven rocks painted with the following images sit on a table: a rainbow, clown fish, monster, cat, bug, palm tree, and a crab

Mississippi River Inspired Artwork with Dave Casey

Minnesota Marine Art Museum Assistant Curator of Education & Exhibitions Dave Casey takes a look at two artworks from the museum's collections inspired by the Mississippi River, Alfred Bricher's "On the Mississippi River, Near Winona, Shower Clearing" (1868) and Adam Turman's "Push Boat and Pelicans" (2016).

Bingo Overboard: Home Edition

Celebrate one of our favorite Second Saturday offerings at home today! To play Bingo Overboard Home Edition, search for the objects around your dwelling and check them off until you get a bingo (or blackout!). Objects in books, art, photos, and movies count too. Can’t find the item? Feel free to get creative and draw it. Happy scavenging!

If you get a bingo, tell the password (Ahoy, matey) to the front desk to win a prize next time you are at MMAM.

Mississippi River Trivia

In the style of the beloved Jeopardy!, play this trivia game and test your knowledge on all things related (and not-so-related) to the Mississippi River. Don’t forget that your answers must be in the form of a question! Best of luck, contestants!

Second Saturday Storytelling Video

Stories are a wonderful way to connect with artworks because certain artworks and stories remind us of each other.  Watch MMAM Volunteer, Laura Armstrong, read Gene Zion’'s Harry by the Sea and examine a painting by Julius LeBlanc Stewart.

Coloring Pages Designed by Local Artists!

Print out and color either, or both, of these original coloring pages designed by local artists Sarah Johnson and Molly Lyn.  Share your results with us!

MMAM Memory Game

Familiarize yourself with artworks in the European and American Collections of the MMAM while playing this fun matching game. Play all four decks!

Doug Boodle Live

Winona duo Doug Boodle, featuring Dante DeGrazia and Seamus St. Clair, perform Mississippi River inspired music for August 8, 2020's Minnesota Marine Art Museum Second Saturdays: Home Edition.

Cookies

A treat enjoyed by many Second Saturday attendees is a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie.  We offer these treats as an incentive to help give us some feedback about the event on a survey.  If you want to bake your own homemade chocolate chip cookies, here is a recipe we highly recommend.  Bon appetit!
