About the event
Get cozy in the galleries on couches and join us for a film specially selected by Dr. Danielle B. Schwartz, of the Winona State Film Studies Program. Dr. Schwartz will give an introduction to why she chose the film and how it relates to the current exhibitions and themes. Bring your own blanket or camping chair if you like, no food or drinks allowed in the galleries.
About the film
Still Life (Dir. Jia Zhangke 2006, Chinese)
Rating: Not Rated
The film follows two different characters set in Fengjie, a small town on the Yangtze River during the building of the Three Gorges Dam. As the dam destroys this river town, a man and a woman on parallel tracks search for their spouses. The film has some surrealist elements that draw attention to the simultaneous destruction of a community and the promise of progress in the face of authoritarianism, bureaucracy, and displacement. The film also explores relationships and connection.
