Participants leave with an assortment of drink coasters and finished papers that can be enjoyed on their own or used as background for writing, painting, drawing, and more. No experience necessary!
This class is for ages 21+ and includes one beverage from MMAM Waterbar Cafe + Provisions (non-alcoholic options available), materials and guidance to create your own set of water marbled papers, and admission to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
*Students receive a 15% discount in the MMAM Shoppe on the day of their class.
About Suminagashi:
Suminagashi, or ink floating, is an ancient and meditative Japanese marbling art. By floating ink on water with a brush and creating patterns gently encouraged with breath and brush and elements from the natural world, we capture monoprints on paper that express the unique realities of the current moment. Through a process that celebrates curiosity and intuition, suminagashi provides a healing pathway by which we can connect with ourselves and our environment to make something beautiful and surprising.
About the instructor:
Dawn Tevis is a public librarian and paper marbler whose affection for the natural world is deeply rooted in the Appalachian foothills. She now finds home in the Driftless. Dawn is passionate about creative placemaking and community engagement and explores through her programming and art the dynamic reciprocity of inner and outer landscapes in order to help further the vitality and diversity of an evolving and collective narrative of place. Dawn holds a master's in library and information science and a master of liberal studies in literary nonfiction and Appalachian studies. She was the recipient of a 2022 and 2025 Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council emerging artist grant and a member of the 2022 Creative Community Leadership Institute cohort.
