December Second Saturday: Home Edition

Art Lore: Storytelling through Art

Inspired by our collections, exhibitions, local artists, and talented staff and volunteers, virtual Second Saturdays will offer some of our favorite components of the on-site program that you can do at home, plus some interactive elements that we could only offer online!

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many stories could the walls of MMAM tell? Every human, and every artwork has a story.

We invite you to explore your story with online activities you can enjoy in your home.  These activities will go live on December 12.

Second Saturday Art Kits

Art Kits available for Pick Up at MMAM on December 12

Our theme for December’s Second Saturday: Home Edition is “Art Lore: Storytelling through Art.”  You’re invited to pick up a storytelling art kit with all of the supplies and instructions to help you imagine a great story.  What story will you tell?

All art kits will include a special admission pass for $1 admission for up to five people.  Admission pass must be used before May 31, 2021.  Please check our website for closures/ hours.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, starting at 10 a.m., we will be offering curbside pickup of 300 art kits at the Museum located at 800 Riverview Drive- until supplies run out. We will have two different art projects — one designed for ages 7 and younger and one designed for children ages 8 and older. Please note that with some accommodations and help from a grown-up, both kits can be fun for kids of all ages. One kit per child please. These will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis — we are not taking reservations.

Second Saturday Storytelling

Stories are a wonderful way to connect with artworks because certain artworks and stories remind us of each other. Watch MMAM Volunteer, Laura Armstrong, read Oh the Thinks you can Think! by Dr. Suess.

Behind the Art: (Definitely NOT) True, Certainly Silly Stories of MMAM Artwork with GRSF!

Join Winona’s Great River Shakespeare Festival Company Members (and professional storytellers) and hear the "maybe-almost-true-or-at-least-interesting-and-always-silly" stories behind some of the extraordinary artworks at MMAM! This video features the talents of Gracie Belt, Victoria Nassif, Benjamin Boucvalt, Valerie Brett, Beth Gardiner, and Leah Gabriel.

Old Time Music with Tanner Brethorst

Join Winona musician Tanner Brethorst as he plays a few fiddle tunes on the banjo and sings an old ballad. Tanner will share some background on old time music and what all goes into making it so special! Thank you to Danny Mathews of The Artist Grid for his video production on this video.

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum sought the help of its social media followers to create a choose-your-own adventure style story in the week leading up to December 12th’s Second Saturdays: Home Edition. We had participants vote along to create the untrue story behind the painting Forest Queen in Winter (1857), by Martin Andreas Reissner, from the collections MMAM..

Recreated here is each step of the way as our fans chose where the adventure would take us.

We would appreciate your feedback!
